It's almost time to go about planting deer plots, so I'm in the market for a trailer to pull my JD790,bush-hog, disc, and fertilize spreader. I have been looking at 16 ft. tandem trailers......problem is, does the weight of the equipment I described above warrant buying a trailer with electrical brakes? About a thousand dollars difference in price over one without them. Ones without elect. brakes is actually same trailer, but rated lower on account of not having the elect. brakes. I want to stay safe on the road, but I don't want to spend another thousand bucks if I don't have to. Thanks.

In many state trailer brakes are required if over a certain weight. In Alabama they are required over 3,000 lbs. of towed weight. They are in my opinion an absolute essential item as is a break away kit. If you don't want to pay for electric brakes ($1,000 sound pretty high to me) consider surge brakes instead. I would suggest the electric brakes as you can adjust the braking action to suit your particular load and situation. You can get the job done without them but you would be illegal and if involved in an accident; you would be in deep dodo with the law, your insurance company, and potential civil litigation. Don't leave home with out them. Depending upon the make and design of the trailer; most come with 3,500 lb. axles so your total load including trailer weight max is 7,000 lbs. Figure up the total weight of your 790 and implements. I don't think you will exceed this but a 16 footer may not be long enough to get all of that on there. Maybe an 18 footer might work better. If you think you might want to add a FEL later on, consider the added weight of the FEL and filled tires & ballast weight as well. Also be sure the tires are TRAILER tires that are the proper weight range (most likely range D) for the trailer load max. Good luck and happy hunting! ....

Very informative post by Chief (link doesn't work, at least for me)
Now if someone was going to charge me $1000.00 for electric brakes.. I'd have to ask the guy if he thinks I'm just plain dumb or did he just absent mindedly misplace the decimal point???
In either case I believe it would be time to go elsewhere..

A 16 foot flatbed will weigh around 1600-1800 pounds empty. I can only guess, but my guess is that your tractor and all the gear weighs 4000 pounds.
My heavy 1/2 ton 4wd pick-up weighs 5000 pounds with me in it.
I would never consider pulling a load that weighs more than the truck unless that load had its own brakes. ....
